What unique injury affects many desk workers?

All jobs come with the risk of injury. As a Connecticut employee who works at a desk, you may not be aware of this. Still, desk workers face their own specific job-related dangers. Today we will take a look at one unique injury that affects many desk workers: carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a degenerative injury that worsens over time. It is often caused by the repeated use of the hand and wrist. For most people, this means their dominant hand is the one affected. There are some cases in which it can affect both hands. Jobs that often result in CTS cases tend to involve a lot of:

  • Typing
  • Writing things by hand
  • Drawing
  • Using a mouse
  • Using calculators
  • Operating telephones

As you can see, this puts people with desk jobs in a prime position to suffer from CTS. Receptionists, secretaries, artists and writers are all at an elevated risk. Anyone who uses a computer most of the day is also at risk.

The only way to prevent CTS is to take precautionary measures. Take breaks often to rest the wrists. Do flex exercises to strengthen and relax the muscles. If you already have a CTS diagnosis, follow your doctor’s orders. Trying to work before you are able will result in the injury worsening.
